I’m a little late on Lil’ Ziggy’s 5 month baby update, but we’re still in the midst of transitioning from Fort McMurray to Calgary. Our good friends have taken us in for a few weeks until we get set up in a rental, and we are so grateful for their hospitality. They have a little boy as well, and he and Ziggy have been so much fun to watch together.
As the weeks went on since my last baby update, I was beginning to worry that I wouldn’t have much to post about this month. Lil’ Ziggy seemed exactly the same for several weeks, with no significant changes or developments. But this week, everything changed and we now have a completely new baby!
Survived the move to Calgary
The first big change for Lil’ Ziggy and our entire family is that we made the move from Fort McMurray to Calgary for my husband’s new job. Ziggy took most of it in stride, but it was a HUGE task to take on, moving while also trying to care for a baby. I got as much done as I could with him bouncing in the jolly jumper, but in the final few days we relied heavily on friends watching Ziggy while we scrambled to pack up our condo and have it professionally cleaned.
Then, it was the eight-hour drive to Calgary, which of course we didn’t start until 4 p.m. Thankfully, Ziggy slept for large chunks of the drive, but once he was awake, he was NOT happy. But we couldn’t pull over every time he started crying, so there were long stretches that were not pleasant for any of us. If we ever make a huge move like this again, I’m going to fly him to our destination. That being said, I’m glad we drove this time around, because I at least was able to help pack up until the very last moment.
And now we’re at our friend’s house in Calgary, and it’s been a bit of an adjustment for Ziggy. Along with all the other changes he’s had this past week, his sleep pattern has been disrupted quite badly. I’m hoping that it returns to something that resembles “normal” again soon. Since my “Hitting the Wall” post, Ziggy went back to sleeping well, and now it’s all in shambles again. I know that this is all temporary, and it’s a season in life, but it’s sometimes hard to believe that I’ll ever sleep longer than 3 hours straight again.
Started swimming lessons
On a positive note, I’ve been taking Lil’ Ziggy to a parent and tot swim class at a local outdoor pool this week, along with the friend I’m staying with and her little boy. Ziggy seems to really love the water, and doesn’t even fuss or cry when I dunk him all the way in! On his last day, he was all smiles as we played games in the pool.
We’re going to keep registering for swim classes so that he develops this very important life skill and grows up loving swimming just like I did.
Starting to reach out and grasp objects
And the biggest development that happened just this week… Lil’ Ziggy has started reaching for things! It all started at 3 a.m. a few nights ago, when I couldn’t figure out why he was refusing to go back to sleep AGAIN. I took him out of his sleep sack and he reached out and grabbed my hand! In that moment, I knew that he finally hit that developmental leap, and that the resulting lack of sleep would be well worth it. It was definitely a proud mama moment!
Since then, he’s reached for my hair elastic and many of his toys. He’s also started rolling from his back to his front a lot more, although he seems to have forgotten how to roll the other way for the time being. He is staying on his tummy for a lot longer now that he has more control over his upper body. It’s exciting to really watch him learn how to do things and experience that sense of wonder with him.
The events of this past week have been fun, rewarding, frustrating and interesting, to say the least. I’m very much looking forward to getting to know this city and learning, along with Lil’ Ziggy, how to navigate our new world together.
